Framing of the Constitution

Soon after his return home, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tasked his interim parliament with the task of drafting a new constitution. On December 14, 1972, Sheikh Mujib signed the first constitution of Bangladesh. On December 15, Sheikh Mujib's government announced to give state titles to the freedom fighters. The new constitution came into effect on December 16. According to political scientistRawnak Jahan, "The four characteristics of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's political thought are Bengali nationhood, socialism, people's harmony and non-communalism. The four basic principles of the Constitution – nationalismsocialismdemocracyandsecularism– reveal the four characteristics. Together these four principles are referred to as Mujibism. [139][140]

On March 7, 1973,the firstparliamentary elections ofindependent Bangladesh were held. Sheikh Mujib and his party Bangladesh Awami League won an absolute majority in that election. Sheikh Mujib was elected fromDhaka-12constituency and took over as the Prime Minister again and formed the first elected government of Bangladesh.
