Bottlenose dolphins leaping from the sea near Honduras

The conversational habits of bottlenose dolphins extend far beyond whistles, squeaks and clicks. While those sounds are common among these highly intelligent mammals, bottlenose dolphins converse in some additional, and surprising, ways as well. For example, they make burst-pulse sounds in high-stress situations, frequently to settle competition over food. Headbutting, jaw-snapping, bubble-blowing and tail-slapping are also used to send messages. Equally impressive are the dolphin's high leaps from the sea. Once thought to simply be a form of exuberant display, these jumps – sometimes as high as 20 feet in the air – are also another way that bottlenose dolphins convey information to one another.
