STUDENTS CAN RESHAPE LEARNING IN BANGLADESH WITH AI

Artificial Intelligence has quietly slipped into classrooms across Bangladesh, and the debate around it has shifted. The question is no longer whether students should use AI. It is how they can use it correctly, so learning actually deepens instead of being outsourced.
That is the core argument of this report, which examines four areas: how AI can sharpen student ability, how prepared Bangladesh currently is to support AI-based learning, the obstacles blocking wider use, and what practical steps could move the country forward.
WHERE AI IS ALREADY MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Education experts point to personalized learning as AI's biggest advantage. A single teacher cannot give individual attention to every student in a crowded classroom, but adaptive AI tools can identify a student's specific weaknesses and adjust content accordingly, offering more practice in math for a struggling student or faster progress in English for a stronger one.
Proponents also say AI can reduce the country's long-standing reliance on rote memorization, allowing a concept to be explained repeatedly and in different ways until a student truly understands it, rather than simply memorizing it for an exam.
Beyond the classroom, AI is being used for research and writing support, helping students summarize information, correct grammar, and practice Bangla-English translation, tasks that traditionally required lengthy one-on-one time with a teacher. It is also being applied to problem-solving, guiding students step by step through difficult questions rather than supplying direct answers, and to time management, helping students plan study routines and exam schedules.
Officials and educators are quick to add a caveat: AI must remain a support for thinking, not a substitute for it. A recent survey in India found that nearly 88 percent of students are already using AI in some form for schoolwork, a trend seen as evidence that structured, ethical guidance is now urgent rather than optional.
POLICY MOVEMENT, BUT SLOW ON THE GROUND
Bangladesh has begun laying policy groundwork for AI in education, even as classroom implementation lags behind.
The government's Smart Bangladesh Vision 2041 sets broad technology integration targets across sectors, including education, with the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) programme playing a central role. The National Curriculum Framework, introduced by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) in 2021, emphasizes competency-based learning, a model that aligns closely with AI-driven personalization.
A draft National AI Policy covering 2026 to 2030 goes further, explicitly warning against over reliance on AI in schools and calling for strict data privacy standards for student records and exam results. The draft also calls for AI, data science, and digital ethics to be woven into education and training at every level.
On the ground, an Asian Development Bank report noted a small-scale teacher training pilot conducted in 2023 and 2024, assessing AI readiness among primary school teachers, a modest but potentially foundational step. Experts have also floated the idea of optional AI courses at the secondary and higher secondary levels, or foundational coding and data science lessons starting even earlier.
Despite the activity, most of this remains confined to policy papers and pilot programs. Widespread classroom adoption, officials and researchers agree, is still years away.
THE OBSTACLES
Several structural barriers stand in the way, according to researchers and education officials.
Chief among them is the digital divide. Rural areas continue to lag behind cities in internet connectivity, device access, and even reliable electricity, a gap that studies link to broader inequalities in digital access nationwide.
Language is another hurdle. Most AI systems are built around English, leaving Bangla-medium students at a disadvantage, and translation of technical or scientific terms into Bangla remains inconsistent, raising the risk that students absorb distorted versions of concepts in physics or biology.
A broader study interviewing 59 stakeholders on Bangladesh's AI readiness identified additional structural weaknesses: outdated curricula, limited professional development for teachers, insufficient computing infrastructure, entrenched gender disparities, and almost no formal instruction in AI ethics.
There are also concerns about overreliance. Commentators, including a widely read piece in Prothom Alo, have compared unchecked AI use to the effect calculators once had on students' basic arithmetic skills, warning that critical thinking could erode if AI is used to generate answers rather than understanding.
Compounding the issue is a lack of institutional policy. Many schools have no approved list of AI tools or data protection guidelines, leaving administrators uncertain about what is safe to permit. Cost is a further barrier, since many advanced AI subscriptions require foreign payment methods largely inaccessible to Bangladeshi households and institutions. And without reliable detection tools, teachers are left to judge originality and responsible use largely on their own.
WHAT COULD CHANGE THE PICTURE
Education specialists have outlined a series of steps they say could close these gaps.
They recommend introducing AI literacy into the national curriculum, starting with introductory material in textbooks from grades six through twelve, and eventually offering it as a standalone subject at the higher secondary level. Teacher and parent training programs are also seen as essential, so adults can properly guide and monitor how students use these tools.
On the technical side, experts are pushing for the development of secure, locally hosted Bangla-language AI models, an effort the draft national policy has already flagged as a priority. Some progress is visible: companies including Google and Microsoft have expanded Bangla-language support in their AI systems, and Bangla speech-to-text and translation accuracy has improved measurably over the past two years.
Affordability is another focus area, with proposals to make AI tools accessible through local mobile payment systems such as bKash, removing the need for foreign payment cards. Officials have also been urged to draft a formal "AI in Education" roadmap, complete with measurable targets, such as ensuring every secondary school has access to at least one AI tool by a specific year, along with an approved platform list and clear data guidelines.
Educators stress that any path forward should treat AI as a support system rather than a replacement, with teachers reviewing AI-generated content, particularly on technical subjects. Analysts have also called for national awareness campaigns on bias and online harm, alongside mandatory labeling of AI-generated material.
AI represents what many in the education sector describe as a genuinely transformative opportunity for Bangladesh, one that could extend personalized, quality learning to students in underserved regions. But that promise remains conditional. It depends on closing the digital divide, training teachers, building Bangla-friendly tools, and, most importantly, ensuring students treat AI as an aid to thinking rather than a replacement for it.
As one education advocate put it, technology is not the destination, it is simply the vehicle. The goal, unchanged, is producing students who are rational, creative, and self-reliant.
