UNC says its investigation found certain actions that went against the university’s values and standards of conduct.

Steve Belichick has resigned as defensive coordinator of the University of North Carolina football team, the university confirmed on September 17, 2026.

Belichick, the son of UNC head coach Bill Belichick, had been on medical leave since August 6. His resignation will take effect on October 27, when his current medical leave ends, according to UNC.

The announcement came as the university released the results of an internal investigation into the football program. UNC said the investigation found that some actions showed a disregard for its values and standards of conduct.

The university also said the issues were “isolated in scope” and did not amount to a systemic failure within the football program. UNC said all required corrective actions are now under way.

Investigation into UNC football program

The investigation had been examining the culture and conduct within the North Carolina football program.

Earlier reports by WRAL said outside investigators had questioned people about allegations involving Steve Belichick. Those questions included whether he had used drugs at university facilities or provided drugs to at least one player.

Those claims were reported as part of the investigation and were not presented by UNC as established facts. The university has not publicly disclosed specific findings about individual allegations.

UNC said it would not provide further comments about individual personnel matters. The university added that it would review any credible new information if it emerged.

Michael Lombardi also resigned

Steve Belichick's departure follows the resignation of North Carolina general manager Michael Lombardi earlier this month.

Lombardi resigned from his position effective September 3. He had been placed on paid administrative leave while the university investigation was under way.

The two departures involve senior figures who had worked closely with Bill Belichick since his arrival at North Carolina.

Bill Belichick became UNC's head coach in late 2024 after a long career in the NFL. Steve Belichick joined his father's staff at North Carolina after serving as Washington's defensive coordinator in 2024.

UNC starts season 2-0

Steve Belichick has not been with the team during the opening games of the 2026 season.

North Carolina won its season opener against TCU in Ireland before beating East Tennessee State. The Tar Heels entered their next game with a 2-0 record.

During Belichick's absence, Bill Belichick and members of the defensive staff have handled the team's defensive duties.

North Carolina is scheduled to visit Clemson on September 19 for its first ACC game of the season.

The university now considers the internal investigation resolved. Steve Belichick is expected to remain on medical leave until October 27, when his resignation becomes effective.
