Abstract

Modern classroom management has emerged as a vital component of effective teaching and learning in the twenty-first century. With changing learner characteristics, increasing classroom diversity, the integration of educational technology, and the growing demand for inclusive education, traditional authoritarian approaches to classroom discipline alone are no longer sufficient. Modern classroom management emphasises mutual respect, clear expectations, positive reinforcement, student engagement, emotional support, formative assessment, and learner-centred pedagogy. This paper examines the concept, principles, strategies, challenges, and educational significance of modern classroom management, with particular attention to secondary-level English classrooms and the educational context of Bangladesh. The study adopts a qualitative, literature-based review approach, synthesising classical classroom-management literature and recent research, particularly studies published in 2025. The review indicates that effective classroom management can contribute to student engagement, self-discipline, meaningful classroom participation, positive teacher-student relationships, and improved opportunities for learning. Recent research also indicates that online classrooms introduce additional challenges related to student participation, interaction, technical infrastructure, and teachers' technology literacy. The paper further discusses the specific classroom-management requirements of secondary English language teaching, where communication, interaction, practice, and feedback are essential. The paper argues that classroom management should not be understood merely as controlling student behaviour; rather, it should be regarded as a professional process of creating a structured, respectful, inclusive, and motivating environment in which meaningful learning can take place.
