Abstract
Teaching English in the twenty-first century has become increasingly complex because of technological development, changing learner expectations, diverse classroom needs, examination pressure, and the growing importance of communication skills. The role of the secondary school English teacher has therefore moved beyond traditional grammar instruction and textbook-based teaching towards learner-centred, communicative, technology-supported, and reflective practices. This paper examines major challenges faced by secondary school English teachers and discusses practical strategies for addressing them. Particular attention is given to mixed-ability classrooms, examination-oriented education, limited opportunities for authentic communication, student motivation, classroom management, digital literacy, artificial intelligence, assessment, and continuing professional development. The paper also presents a reflective perspective informed by more than 25 years of English language teaching experience. It argues that professional experience becomes more effective when enriched through reflection, research, collaboration, technological awareness, and lifelong learning. The paper proposes an integrated framework combining language competence, pedagogy, communicative teaching, differentiated instruction, formative assessment, digital literacy, AI awareness, classroom management, and reflective practice.
