BPA Lesson 1:  English MID CENTRAL VOWEL SOUND

Some of you write "Sir" in Bangla as স্যার. In future wrte it as স্য:র .  That is how we will wrtie it in BPA.  The vowel in the word "SIR"  has a very special sound.  It cannot be truly represented by "jawfola akar"  which is OK for  words like "sad" or "sat".

In the English word "SIR", there is a special English vowel sound, which is called MID CENTRAL VOWEL.

Your tongue is in a position which is just in the middle of your mouth both horizontally and vertically.

Horizontally, the tongue is to be placed NOT in front (near the teeth) NOR near the back of your mouth. Just in the middle.

Vertically, it is NOT on top (not touching your palate) of your mouth NOR at the bottom resting. Again, just in the middle.

Just pronounce the word and feel your tongue position inside your mouth.

Now pronounce other English words like "bird", "shirt", "nurse", "heard"", "curl"  etc as ব্য:র্ড , শ্য:র্ট , ন্য:র্স ,

হ্য:র্ড, ক্য:র্ল etc. Try pronouncing these words aloud along with a friend and correct each other, if necessary.

Remember that in a BPA transcrtiption of an English text whenever you will see the Jawfola followed by the

bishorgoচিহ্ন  you will pronounce the vowel as a MID CENTRAL VOWEL.
