The Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) course is an exceptional opportunity for English teaching professionals worldwide. Overview of the Course

The TEYL Fall 2024 Section 4 course focuses on equipping educators with effective strategies for teaching English to young learners. The course is divided into modules that cover a variety of key areas:

1. Innovative Teaching Strategies: Practical techniques for engaging young learners.

2. Digital Integration: Leveraging technology to enhance English teaching.

3. Classroom Management: Ensuring an inclusive and effective learning environment.

4. Cultural Sensitivity: Incorporating cultural understanding into teaching.

Course Structure

The course is structured to include the following components:

• Module Videos: Each module begins with instructional videos that set the foundation for the week’s lessons.

• Articles and Readings: Relevant academic and practical resources are provided to deepen understanding.

• Quizzes: Assessments at the end of each module ensure comprehension and retention.

• Discussion Boards: Participants share insights and reflect on their experiences.

• Assignments and Assessments: Tasks are designed to apply learning to real-world teaching scenarios.

• Rubrics: Clear guidelines for completing and evaluating assignments.

Key Policies and Guidelines

Communication

Participants are responsible for staying in touch with their instructors and the OPEN program team for any issues or queries. Communication channels include:

• Canvas Messaging: For course-related questions.

• Technical Support: Available through [email protected].

• Emergency Communication: Notify the U.S. Embassy, instructor, and OPEN team immediately in case of extenuating circumstances.

Disenrollment and Inactivity Policies

1. Disenrollment: Participants who fail to accept the Canvas course invitation within the first five weeks will be disenrolled.

2. Inactive Audit Status: Participants who do not actively engage by the fifth week without prior communication will be moved to “Audit” status, making them ineligible for certificates or instructor support.

Withdrawal Policy

Participants unable to complete the course must inform FHI 360 and the U.S. Embassy promptly. Valid reasons may allow for future participation in similar programs.

Netiquette

The course emphasizes respectful communication and digital citizenship. Participants must:

• Follow guidelines for creating a respectful learning environment.

• Use polite, constructive language in discussions and interactions.

• Avoid posts that violate community standards.

Violations may lead to removal from the program after appropriate warnings.

Plagiarism and AI Usage

Plagiarism

Using someone else’s words or ideas without proper attribution is strictly prohibited. The course implements a three-step policy for handling plagiarism:

1. First Report: Participants are given resources on avoiding plagiarism.

2. Second Report: The U.S. Embassy is notified, and a warning is issued.

3. Third Report: Participants are removed from the course and may be ineligible for future participation.

AI Tools

Participants may use AI tools within specific boundaries:

• Permitted Uses:
  • Brainstorming ideas.

  • Generating outlines.

  • Paraphrasing and summarizing text for comprehension.

  • Grammar and spelling checks.

• Prohibited Uses:
  • Copying AI-generated content directly into assignments.

  • Using AI to write or complete assignments.

All AI usage must be cited, ensuring transparency and academic integrity.

Assessments and Submissions

Rubrics and Instructions

Every assignment is accompanied by detailed rubrics and instructions. Participants are encouraged to:

• Follow the guidelines carefully.

• Reflect on personal teaching experiences.

• Submit work that demonstrates original thought and application of course concepts.

Re-Submissions

In cases where assignments require revisions, participants must adhere to the provided feedback and resubmission guidelines. Timely and accurate revisions contribute to successful course completion.

Course Completion

Successfully completing the TEYL course involves:

1. Active Participation: Engaging in discussions, quizzes, and activities.

2. Assignment Submission: Following instructions and rubrics meticulously.

3. Adhering to Policies: Respecting guidelines on plagiarism, AI use, and netiquette.

4. Final Assessment: Demonstrating mastery of course content in the final assignment.

Upon completion, participants receive a certificate and join the OPEN alumni community, which offers ongoing opportunities for professional development.
