A Glimpse into the Magical World of Eleanor Farjeon

Eleanor Farjeon (1881–1965) was a prolific English author celebrated for her children's stories, poems, and plays. Born into a literary family in London, her creative childhood was profoundly influential on her later writing career. Though she received no formal education, she spent much time surrounded by books in her family's extensive home library. Her father, a novelist, greatly encouraged her writing from a very young age.

Farjeon produced a wide variety of work, including biography, history, and satire, in addition to her popular children's fiction. Her well-known work, Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard (1921), was originally intended for adults but became famous as a children's classic. She is also remembered as the author of the beloved hymn, "Morning Has Broken."

In the 1950s, Farjeon received major acclaim, including the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 1955 for her collection, The Little Bookroom. A year later, she was the first recipient of the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal. Her legacy is honored annually by the Children's Book Circle with the Eleanor Farjeon Award, celebrating outstanding contributions to children's books. Her gentle imagination and ability to blend fantasy with reality left a profound mark on literature for young readers.
