সক্রেটিসের উদ্দেশ্যে বিচারকেরা বললেনঃ

“যদি আপনি কথা বলা সম্পূর্ণরূপে বন্ধ করেন, তবে আমরা আপনাকে ক্ষমা করে দিতে পারি। আপনি যা সত্য বলে ভাবেন, সেসব আপনাকে যাদের মাঝে বসবাস করতে হবে তারা সত্য বলে মনে করেন না।

আপনার সত্য তাদের অসন্তুষ্ট করে তুলছে। আপনি যদি এ ব্যাপারে কথা দেন, তবে আমরা আপনাকে বিশ্বাস করি। আমরা জানি আপনি কথা দিয়ে কথা রাখেন। যদি আপনি পুনরায় কথা না বলার অঙ্গীকার করেন এবং নীরব থাকার ব্যাপারে সম্মতি দেন, তবে আপনি আপনার জীবন রক্ষা করতে পারেন।”

সক্রেটিস বললেন “সত্য বলার জন্যই আমার জীবনধারণ। অস্তিত্ব আমায় জীবন দিয়েছে সত্যের অভিজ্ঞতা লাভের জন্য। অন্ধকারে সত্য হাতড়ে বেড়ানো মানুষদের মাঝে সত্যের বাণীকে ছড়িয়ে দেয়া হচ্ছে জীবনের প্রতি আমার কৃতজ্ঞতাবোধের বহিঃপ্রকাশ।

 যদি আমাকে কথা বলতে না দেয়া হয়, তবে আমি বেঁচে থাকার কোন মানে খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না। আমার জীবন এবং সত্যের বাণী সমার্থক। আপনারা আমায় ভ্রষ্ট করার চেষ্টা করবেন না। যদি আমি বেঁচে থাকি, তবে আমি বলেই যাবো”

বিচারকেরা স্তম্ভিত হয়ে গেলেন। তাদের একজন বলে উঠলেন, “আপনি একজন কঠিন ও জেদি ব্যক্তি ব্যতীত কিছুই নন।”

সক্রেটিস বললেন, “আমি কঠিন নই। কঠিন হচ্ছে সত্য। কঠিন হচ্ছে নৈতিকতা। সত্য আপোস করতে জানে না। আমি ক্ষুদ্র একটি জীবনের জন্য আপোস করতে পারি না। চিরতরে অবদমিত হবার চেয়ে, আমার কাছে মৃত্যুই শ্রেয়। ইতোমধ্যেই বার্ধক্যের সাথে আমার দেখা হয়েছে।

 যে কোনভাবেই মৃত্যু আমার কাছে আসবে। বরং এভাবে মৃত্যুকে গ্রহণ করাই অধিকতর সুন্দর, কারণ এতে করে মৃত্যুও অর্থবহ হয়ে উঠবে। আপনাদের শর্তমতে আমি মৃত্যুকে গ্রহণ করছি যাতে এটি স্পষ্ট হয় যে , তুচ্ছ মৃত্যু আমাকে সত্য বলা হতে বিরত রাখতে পারেনি।

The judges said to Socrates:

 “If you stop talking completely, we can forgive you.  What you think is true, the people you have to live among don't think it's true. 

 .

 Your truth is making them unhappy.  If you talk about it, we believe you.  We know you talk your talk.  If you vow not to speak again and agree to remain silent, you can save your life.”

 .

 Socrates said “My life is to tell the truth.  Existence gave me life to experience truth.  Spreading the word of truth among people who are searching for the truth in the dark is an expression of my gratitude towards life.

 .

  If I am not allowed to speak, I find no point in living.  My life and the word of truth are synonymous.  Don't try to corrupt me.  If I live, I will say so.”

 .

 The judges were stunned.  “You are nothing but a tough and stubborn person,” said one of them.

 .

 Socrates said, “I am not difficult.  The truth is hard.  Morality is difficult.  Truth knows no compromise.  I can't compromise for a small life.  Death is better for me than being oppressed forever.  I have already met old age.

 .

  Either way death will come to me.  Rather, it is more beautiful to accept death in this way, because it makes death meaningful.  I accept death on your terms so that it is clear that a trivial death has not prevented me from speaking the truth.
