How to Teach English Text Easily

Is teaching English text easy? For me, it is not. It is difficult, and it becomes more difficult in the classroom. However, text reading is one of the most essential parts of students’ lives—not only for school, but for life.

Perhaps we make mistakes every moment. Doing wrong is easy. I am not a very good teacher, and I was not a good student either. Still, I would like to share a simple solution to this problem.

Firstly, I sincerely apologize if my solution sounds weak, because I have not gathered much knowledge in my heart. Yet, from my experience, I believe one important rule:

Do not start reading first.

Steps to Teach English Text Easily

Show pictures related to the text.

This creates interest and background knowledge.

Ask about the headline

What is the title?

What do students think the text is about?

Teacher reads first

Students listen carefully.

Read fluently.

Focus on smooth reading, not speed.

Teach punctuation

Full stop, comma, question mark—pause properly.

Choral reading

Teacher and students read together.

Phrase by phrase, not word by word.

Meaning comes from phrases, not single words.

Stop and ask questions

Who? What? Where? Why?

Students’ reading (small parts)

One or two lines only, to build confidence.

Action reading

Use actions and expressions for meaning.

Echo reading

Teacher reads a line, students repeat.

Final Thought

Every step depends on students’ mentality, situation, and attention.

A teacher must be flexible, patient, and kind.

Reading should be a friend, not a fear.
