1. Objectives (উদ্দেশ্য)

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Identify metaphor, simile, personification, and imagery in sentences and poems.

Explain their meanings clearly.

Use these figures of speech in their own sentences.

2. Warm-up (5 minutes)

Teacher writes on the board:

“The classroom is a zoo.”

Ask: Is the classroom really a zoo? Why did the writer say this?

Students will respond: It means the class is noisy or chaotic.

এখানে সরাসরি অর্থ নয়, তুলনা বোঝানো হয়েছে।

3. Presentation (15 minutes)

a) Simile (উপমা)

Definition: A comparison using like or as.

Examples:

He is as brave as a lion.

The girl sings like a nightingale.

বাংলা:

Simile-এ like/as ব্যবহার করে তুলনা করা হয়।

b) Metaphor (রূপক)

Definition: A direct comparison without like/as.

Examples:

Time is a thief.

The classroom is a zoo.

বাংলা:

এখানে সরাসরি এক জিনিসকে আরেক জিনিস বলা হয়।

Simile: He is like a lion

Metaphor: He is a lion

c) Personification (মানবিকীকরণ)

Definition: Giving human qualities to non-human things.

Examples:

The wind whispered softly.

The sun smiled at us.

বাংলা:

জড় বস্তুকে মানুষের গুণ দেওয়া হয়।

d) Imagery (চিত্রকল্প)

Definition: Language that creates a picture in the reader’s mind using senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch).

Examples:

The golden sun set behind the quiet blue hills.

The sweet smell of flowers filled the air.

এটি এমন বর্ণনা যা চোখে দেখা, কানে শোনা বা অনুভব করা যায়।

4. Practice (10 minutes)

Ask students to identify the figure of speech:

“Her face is like the moon.” → Simile

“Books are windows to the world.” → Metaphor

“The leaves danced in the wind.” → Personification

“The cold wind touched my face.” → Imagery

5. Production (8–10 minutes)

Students create their own sentences:

1 simile

1 metaphor

1 personification

1 imagery

Example answer:

Simile: He runs like a deer.

6. Evaluation (5 minutes)

Ask:

What is the difference between simile and metaphor?

Give one example of personification.
