Litchi tree in Bangladesh
The litchi tree (Litchi chinensis) is a beloved evergreen fruit tree in Bangladesh. It grows to about 12 meters (40 feet) tall. It thrives in warm, humid climates and well-drained loamy soil. Trees bloom in January and February. The sweet, juicy red fruits ripen and are harvested in May and June.
Popular Varieties
Bangladesh grows several types of litchi:
  • Bombai: The most popular variety, known for its high yield and good taste.
  • Bedana: Famous for its very small seed (or no seed) and sweet, juicy flesh.
  • Madrazi, China-2, China-3, and Mozaffari: Other common, tasty types.
Growing Regions
While litchis grow across the country, Dinajpur is the top litchi producer due to its ideal soil and climate. Rajshahi and Meherpur are also famous for their delicious litchis.
How to Grow
  1. Soil: Pick a high, slightly elevated piece of land so the roots do not sit in water.
  2. Planting: Dig a small hole (about the size of your hand) and plant it during the monsoon months (June to August).
  3. Fertilizer: Add compost, TSP, and potash when planting. Add urea after three months.
  4. Water: Water regularly so the roots stay moist, but never allow waterlogging.
