The icddr,b (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) is a world-renowned, non-profit international health research institute based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, dedicated to saving lives through breakthrough scientific research, clinical care, and innovation. 
History and Background
Origins: Founded in the 1960s as the SEATO Cholera Research Laboratory during a major cholera pandemic.
Transition: Officially established as icddr,b in 1978 through a government ordinance and international recognition.
Core Donors: Supported heavily by global agencies and core grants from the governments of Bangladesh and Canada.
Major Scientific Achievements
Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS): Co-developed and successfully trialed ORS in the late 1960s, a simple fluid treatment credited with saving tens of millions of lives globally. 
Zinc Treatment: Pioneered evidence in the 1990s showing zinc shortens diarrhea duration, leading to worldwide WHO adoption alongside ORS.
Matlab Surveillance: Operates the world's longest-running continuous health and demographic surveillance site (HDSS) in Matlab, Chandpur, since 1966. 
Clinical Care & Operations
Hospitals: Runs the world's largest diarrheal hospitals—the Dhaka Hospital and Matlab Hospital—treating over 250,000 patients annually, mostly free of charge for the poor. 
Broadened Scope: Expanded research beyond cholera to address malnutrition, pneumonia, emerging vaccines (cholera, typhoid, dengue, COVID-19), and maternal-child health. 
Diagnostics & Services: Offers advanced laboratory testing, vaccination programs, and specialized traveler's health clinics.
