The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations founded in April 1919. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it brings together governments, employers, and workers from 187 member states to set labor standards, promote rights at work, and encourage safe, decent employment opportunities.

Core Goals and Structure

Tripartite Model: Unites government, worker, and employer voices equally.

Decent Work Agenda: Focuses on job creation, social protection, worker rights, and social dialogue.

Labor Standards: Creates international rules on minimum wages, work hours, safety, and the elimination of child or forced labor.

Local Context (Bangladesh)

Bangladesh has been a member state since June 22, 1972.

The organization works locally through the ILO Country Office for Bangladesh to improve workplace safety, labor rights, and social protection in major industries like ready-made garments.
