From Trash to Teaching Tool: An Interactive 3D Preposition Diorama

Teaching prepositions to primary students through traditional board-work can sometimes feel abstract and dry. Kids often struggle to visualize spatial concepts like over, under, between, or in front of. To make this concept hands-on and memorable, I created this interactive 3D model: "Where is the monkey?"

The Story Behind the Model: Interestingly, this model wasn’t made from store-bought materials or basic cardboard. The base is actually a piece of discarded PVC board that someone had literally thrown into our school pond! Seeing its potential for the classroom, I fished it out of the trash, cleaned it up, and transformed it into this durable teaching tool.

How It Works in Class: Instead of memorizing definitions, students physically move the cute monkey cutout through different slots and positions—placing it ON the tree, sliding it UP or DOWN, placing it BETWEEN the grass patches, or sitting it UNDER the tree.

Why This Approach Works Wonders:

Sustainable & Durable: Rescuing thrown-away PVC board proved to be waterproof, sturdy, and long-lasting for daily classroom use.

Experiential Learning: Children understand prepositions effortlessly when they physically interact with spatial placement rather than reading rules.

Gamified Practice: Turning grammar into a quick game—"Where is the monkey now?"—keeps the entire class engaged, excited, and curious.

It is truly amazing how a little creativity can turn literal waste into a powerful learning experience for our students.
