How HSC GPA Is Calculated

After getting the result, many students want to know how the GPA is worked out. In HSC, there are 7 subjects in total — 6 compulsory (main) subjects and 1 fourth (optional) subject.

The GPA formula: add the grade points of the 6 main subjects, add the extra points of the fourth subject, and divide by 6. From the fourth subject, only the part above 2.00 is added; if you score 2.00 or less in the fourth subject, nothing is added. The maximum GPA is 5.00 — even if the calculation gives more, the GPA shown will be 5.00.

For example, if a student's 6 main subjects total 27.00 grade points and the fourth subject grade is 5.00, the GPA will be (27.00 + (5.00 − 2.00)) ÷ 6 = 30.00 ÷ 6 = 5.00. The grade point scale is: 80+ marks = A+ (5.00), 70–79 = A (4.00), 60–69 = A− (3.50), 50–59 = B (3.00), 40–49 = C (2.00), 33–39 = D (1.00), and 0–32 = F (0.00).
