The Motherboard.

motherboard

The motherboard of a modern PC is the subject of a major part of a degree. I am only covering this at a very basic level here. The Diagram labels components that I will only mention briefly. The important parts are underlined in red.

The important parts of the motherboard at GCSE level are:

CPU.

This is placed in the 754 socket with a fan on top of it to cool it. The CPU is the main chip in the PC where all the data processing is performed.

BIOS

This controls communication between all of the various components in the PC. It keeps a semi permanant record of the components (like the hard disk) that are in the machine which might be upgraded or replaced as the machine ages.

DDR DIMM

These are the memory sockets where the RAM is placed. The data is held here while the computer is switched on. All the data in these chips is lost when the power goes.

AGP slot

This is where the graphics card is placed. If the machine has one. Basic graphics control is found on some cheaper motherboards - machines that are used to play action games will have a graphics card.

PCI slots

This motherboard has five white PCI slots this is where cards like a sound card or NIC will be inserted to add functions to the PC.

Various Headers - control the named parts (not required at GCSE level)
