Use can for present abilities, general possibilities, or casual permission. Use could for past abilities, future possibilities with uncertainty, or highly polite requests. Generally, could is softer and more formal than can. [1]
1. Ability and Skill
Use can to describe what someone is capable of doing right now. Use could as the past tense to describe what someone was able to do in the past: [1]
  • Can (Present): "I can speak fluent Spanish."
  • Could (Past): "She could swim by the age of five." [1, 2, 3]
2. Requests and Permission
Both words are used to ask for things, but could is the more polite and formal choice. [1]
  • Can: "Can I use your phone?" (Informal, good for friends)
  • Could: "Could I use your phone, please?" (Polite, better for strangers or formal settings) [1]
3. Possibility
Both verbs talk about what is possible, but they convey different levels of likelihood. [1]
  • Can: Expresses a strong, general possibility. "Smoking can cause health problems."
  • Could: Expresses a weaker, uncertain, or hypothetical possibility. "It could rain later this afternoon."
